Classe Mini
Set up by Becky Scott (currently campaigning Basecamp), the UK Mini Solo Training Programme will help British Mini sailors (who usually have limited time and funds to get out to France) get up to speed in the class. Over four weekends the training aims to cover rig tuning, boat handling, speed testing, navigation, meteorology, nutrition, personal preparation and tactics.
Final preparations
So here we are just a few days before the start of my first solo race. All in all I am feeling pretty well prepared, my boats in good shape, a few jobs to do before the start but nothing to major.
The big move North and a race too!
It’s been a hectic couple of weeks as we moved from our winter training ground in La Grande Motte up to the Atlantic coast. This involved a lot of boat work, stripping down the masts and preparing to truck the boats whilst trying to knock a few jobs off an ever-growing list!
Les Sables d’Olonne practice race
On the 7th March, Henry, Ollie and I set off on an over night practice race in preparation for the Solo Figaro Massif Marine. We raced around two islands, one off La Rochelle and one North of Les Sables covering a section of the route we will take, starting from Les Sables d’Olonne on the 15th March.
The first weekend of the UK Solo Mini Training Programme
This winter has been a busy one for me, fixing and mending the boat in preparation for the coming race season. It was great to see my work come together this weekend as part of the UK Solo Mini Training Programme.
First race of the season
We’ve spent the last 2 weeks training in preparation for the Solo Figaro Massif Marine 2012, which is the first event of the season. It doesn’t count towards the Championship of France (like the Figaro and Izmir Cup) but, it is the first time we get to race against the majority of our competition and see how we are doing after the winters training.
Training at Pole Vendee
Last week we took the guys at Pole Vendee up on their kind offer to join in with their training in St Gille Groix de Vie. This training center on the west coast of France is home to two very accomplished Figaro sailors, Morgan Lagraviere (top rookie in the Solitaire last year and 7th Overall) and Gildas Mahe (funny guy and wise old Figaro hand).
Delivery Fun
I’m writing this from the comfort of the Artemis blue bus as Simon the French ‘preparature’ and I drive south to St Gilles having just pushed Sam off the dock at Lorient.
