Sam began competing in the Cadet class for the RYA's national squad in 2002. Following multiple dinghy sailing campaigns including Laser 4.7, Laser standard and 29er, Sam eventually found his feet in offshore sailing at the age of 18 when he joined his father in the 2-handed division for the 2009 Rolex Fastnet race.

Sam's co-skipper partnership with his father didn't end at the Fastnet, the duo continued to compete offshore together in a number of offshore campaigns, achieving one of their greatest triumphs during the 2011 Azores and Back (AZAB) race with a class win.

In 2009 Sam gained a place in the British Keelboat Academy and broadened his horizons by completing a fully crewed RORC campaign onboard John Merricks II (TP52).

After trials in 2010, Sam Matson joined the Artemis Offshore Academy in 2011 as a member of the Part-Time Development Squad, a position he would keep in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Sam made his debut as an offshore sailor in 2014, and crowned his season finishing 15th of the Solitaire, second rookie overall.

He confirmed his good results in 2015, this time sailing under the Chatham colours, finishing 13th of the Solitaire.

He started out his 2016 season with a transatlantic race from Concarneau to Saint-Barthelemy in the French West Indies. Sailed with fellow Artemis Alumni Robin Elsey, Artemis crossed the finish line 6th overall only 3 hours after the first boat. He finished 14th of the 2016 Le Havre Allmer Cup, his first and final solo race of he season before the Solitaire.

At the Solitaire - his 3rd - the Chatham Skipper finished 21st.
