"The best thing about solo sailing is being in control of your own destiny once you leave the dock."

Nick Cherry got introduced into elite sailing in 2003 when he finished 12th overall at the 420 World Championship.

The next year, after winning the Student Yachting Nationals, he made a decisive move to Match Racing, finishing 4th at the European Match Racing Championship.

He would go on to win the British Match Racing Finals in 2006, 2007 and 2010.

He started offshore sailing in 2009, when he would finish 11th overall at the prestigious Fastnet Race.

In 2010, he finished 2nd of the Cork Week, 3rd of the Danish Big Boat Challenge and 4th of the Sevenstar round Britain and Ireland Race.

Nick joined the Artemis Offshore Academy in 2011, joining the Development Squad for 2 years, before making his solo debut in 2012. That year, he finished 3rd of the Solo Basse Normandie and 25th of the Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro.

In 2013, this time sailing under the Magma Structures flag, he finished 17th at his 2nd participation in the Figaro.

Since 2014, Nick has been sailing for Redshift, a privately founded team that works around him. He finished 26th of the Figaro in 2014, and 33rd in 2015.

So far in 2016, Nick Cherry finished 9th of the Solo Concarneau and 4th of the Solo Maitre Coq, wining one of the inshore races. In the first race of the French National Solo Offshore Championship - the 2016 Le Havre Allmer Cup - he finished 9th obtaining his 3rd consecutive Top 10 this season.

In the 2016 Solitaire - his 5th participation which is a British record - Cherry finished 18th, a clear improvement on last year's results. It is his best result since 2013.
