The
final leg of the WOW Cap Istanbul came to a conclusion on Wednesday
(13th October) in Istanbul. Jonny Malbon on board the Artemis Figaro was
competing against 25 other solo Figarists on this 1,590-mile race from
Hyères (France) that began on 19th September.
The
final 110-mile leg started at the exit of the Dardanelles Strait on
Tuesday (12th October) with 10 knots of breeze providing a good start
for the 26 solo Figaro sailors. The boats closest to the shore seemed to
have more favourable conditions - Jonny Malbon on the Artemis Figaro
was in 21st place but only 1.1nm from the leader. By Wednesday morning
(13th October), halfway into the 110-mile leg, Jonny moved into 8th
place as wind conditions allowed him to set a course for the finish
line. He jumped up the leaderboard ahead of his rivals who had been
forced to sail more miles before the wind of change. By 13h49 Jonny was
up to 5th, but in a closely packed fleet, so the last miles were going
to be the most testing.
Jonny hung on, only conceding two places in the final miles, reaching
the finish line of the WOW Cap Istanbul race at 17h44 local time in 7th
place - his best leg finish of the five-leg race. The leg winner was
François Gabart who crossed the finish line at 17:22:37 local time and
this second leg win for the skipper of Macif 2010 was enough to secure
his overall victory in the WOW Cap Istanbul race with a cumulative time
of 10 days, 15 hours, 36 minutess and 18 secondss, against his closest
rivals Erwan Tabarly, second overall, and Fabien Delahaye in third.
Ultimately, Jonny was ranked 25th overall with a time of 12 days, 0
hours, 16 minutes and 43 seconds. This race completes Jonny Malbon’s
2010 Figaro season.
