Solo Normandie

Returning to its usual May time slot in 2016, the Solo Basse Normandie is a challenging race and the final warm up ahead of the Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro.

Starting from the small fishing town of Granville in Brittany, the sailors must first find their way out of the harbour, only accessible for a few hours a day due to extreme tides and sand banks.

Expected to be a long and tactical race plighted by shifty winds under the summer sun, the Solo Basse Normandie spans over 300nm north around the Cherbourg peninsular to Le Havre on the northern coast of France.

The 2015 Solo Basse Normandie was a heinous affair. Opening the competitive season in March, stormy weather and rough tides called for a shortened course. Skippers were subjected to 24 hours of no sleep at the helm in the driving wind and rain, before returning to the finish line outside of the harbour – where they then sat unable to dock for two hours.

The 2016 edition should make for a different race. Taking place between 12th and 14th May, skippers should expect light airs and hot and dehydrating conditions.

Finishing in Le Havre on the 15th May, only a month will stand between the tired Solo Basse Normandie skippers and the Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro start line.
