Jonny Malbon saves best result till last as final leg concludes in Istanbul 14 - 10 - 10 at 09:34:52

The final leg of the WOW Cap Istanbul came to a conclusion on Wednesday (13th October) in Istanbul. Jonny Malbon on board the Artemis Figaro was competing against 25 other solo Figarists on this 1,590-mile race from Hyères (France) that began on 19th September. The final 110-mile leg started at the exit of the Dardanelles Strait on Tuesday (12th October) with 10 knots of breeze providing a good start for the 26 solo Figaro sailors. The boats closest to the shore seemed to have more favourable conditions - Jonny Malbon on the Artemis Figaro was in 21st place but only 1.1nm from the leader. By Wednesday morning (13th October), halfway into the 110-mile leg, Jonny moved into 8th place as wind conditions allowed him to set a course for the finish line and jump up the leaderboard ahead of his rivals who had been forced to sail more miles before the wind of change. By 13h49 Jonny was up to 5th but the fleet were close packed together and the last miles were going to be the most testing.  Jonny hung on, only conceding two places in the final miles, reaching the finish line of the WOW Cap Istanbul race at 17h44 local time in 7th place - his best leg finish of the five-leg race.  The leg winner was François Gabart who crossed the finish line at 17:22:37 local time and this second leg win for the skipper of Macif 2010 was enough to secure his overall victory in the WOW Cap Istanbul race with a cumulative time of 10 days, 15 hours, 36 minutess and 18 secondss, against his closest rivals Erwan Tabarly, second overall, and Fabien Delahaye in third. Ultimately, Jonny was ranked 25th overall with a time of 12 days, 0 hours, 16 minutes and 43 seconds.  This race completes Jonny Malbon’s 2010 Figaro season.

Leg 4 over and only one leg remaining on Cap Istanbul for Jonny Malbon… 10 - 10 - 10 at 09:23:05

Yesterday evening the leaders on the WOW Cap Istanbul Race reached the finish line in Bozcaada (Turkey). The fourth leg of 185-miles took the solo Figaro skippers on a route from Didim northwards through the Aegean sea. It was Gildas Morvan (Cercle Vert) who took control at the front in the final stages of the race to secure his second leg victory, crossing the line at 18:47:42 in a time of 1d 6h 33m 42s.  Just under 17 minutes later, Jeanne Gregoire (only one of two female skippers on this race) finished in second place, 6 minutes ahead of 3rd place Fabien Delahaye.  Jonny Malbon on the Artemis Figaro kept in touch with the fleet throughout this leg finishing just before midnight last night in 22nd place, 4h 53m 29s behind Morvan, in a time of 1d 11h 27m 11s.  Winds were generally moderate to strong on the day and a half leg and offered the soloists very little opportunity to sleep, as they navigated through the multiple islands along the Turkish coast.  The impact on the overall standings based on cumulative time ahead of the final leg, puts Gildas Morvan at the top of the rankings on a time of 9d 13h 20m 18s, Fabian Delahaye in second only 8m 30s behind and Francois Gabart who was the overall leader after leg 3, 30m 23s off the leader.  There is now only one leg remaining of the 5-leg WOW Cap Istanbul race which began in Hyères (France) on 19th September. To reach the start of the fifth leg, the fleet will sail in convoy on Tuesday (12th October) from Bozcaada to the exit of Dardanelles Strait - this stretch of water is particularly busy with traffic, narrow and shallow in places so it is for safety reasons that they sail (not race) in convoy. Once through the Strait the fleet will cross the starting line for the 110-mile leg to the final finish line in Istanbul.

Racing across the Aegean under the moonlight in the Cap Istanbul race… 09 - 10 - 10 at 08:41:48

Racing under full main and solent foresail in 17+ knots of NNE wind, Francisco Lobato is still leading the 26-boat fleet on leg 4 of the Cap Istanbul race from Didim to Bozcaada (Turkey).  Last night only under the light of the moon, the solo skippers remain alert as they sail through the busy Aegean islands along the coast of Turkey - first passing the large island of Samos to their right, then earlier today the island of Khios. The bulk of the fleet are tightly bunched together, Jonny Malbon is 10.5nm behind the leader and following closely the same course with 72 miles to go on this 185-mile leg, racing northwards at 6 knots to Bozcaada. Less than 2 miles separates the top three with Jeanne Grégoire (1 of 2 female skippers in the race) neck and neck with the leader, Lobato, and Gildas Morvan trailing a mile and a half further back. The Figaro fleet will be finishing this evening.

Another tight finish on leg 3 of the Cap Istanbul Race… 04 - 10 - 10 at 16:21:10

Only 16 seconds separated the first two boats at the finish of the 190-mile leg from Athens to Didim! Francois Gabart (Skipper Macif 2010) finished at 12:03:11 UTC today followed 16 seconds later by Francisco Lobato (ROFF Tempo Team) and Gildas Morvan (Cercle Vert) completed the podium a minute after the leg winner. Jonny Malbon on Artemis will be happier with his performance on this leg, finishing only 44 minutes behind the leader at 12:47:57 in a time of 1 day, 1 hour, 47 minutes and 57 seconds in 23rd place. It was also a close finish for Jonny and his closest rivals - finishing 12 mins behind Matthieu Girolet and just 57 secs ahead of Louis Maurice Tannyeres. Based on cumulative time (over the 3 legs so far) leaves Francois Gabart in control with 6 mins 56 secs lead over Fabien Delahaye. Leg 4 from Didim to Boscaada (185nm) starts at 13h00 local time on Friday, 8th October.
